Nickel silver is an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc that used to be called new silver. It has a silvery color with no plating at all, it does not darken in air and, above all, it is noticeably harder and springier than brass. A bent rod tries to return to its original shape, so a thin feature stays straight even after years in a display case and does not sag.
A diameter of 0.9 mm is a rewarding size for the pins of movable joints, which replace broken plastic pegs, for the axles of small wheels, the barrels of small arms, handles, footsteps, antenna mounts or replacement pitot tubes. It also proves itself as a hidden stiffener inside thin parts, for example undercarriage legs or crane jibs, which the plastic alone would not carry.
The rod is cut with pliers or a saw and the end is leveled with a file. It is set into plastic in a pre-drilled hole with instant or two-part glue, and metal joints can be soldered with soft solder. Before painting, degrease and roughen the surface with a fine abrasive, as smooth metal otherwise rejects paint. A primer suitable for metals improves the result further.
The material gets on well with brass and photo-etched parts, so they can be joined without worrying about differing expansion.
A longer length straightens itself when you draw it between your fingers and pull it slightly taut. Keep the offcuts, as even a short piece serves as a drilling mandrel, as a holder pin for painting or as a connecting peg between two castings.
