Exhausts, pipes and heat shields never look like clean metal. High temperature changes the surface: the metal darkens, roughens and gets coated with a layer of burnt residue. This shade captures exactly that state — a dark metal with a brownish cast — onto which further effects can then be applied.
The paint is water-thinnable and supplied pre-thinned for an airbrush. The metallic particles in it are coarser than in glossy shades, so the surface once dry is not mirror-like but matte-metallic. That is desirable on exhausts.
On radial engines, exhaust stacks vary depending on how long the aircraft flew. A freshly replaced pipe is dark and even, while a long-used one is rusty and unevenly colored.
On jet engines, nozzle ends differ from piston-engine exhausts: they tend to be lighter, with more pronounced heat-tint colors. It therefore pays to look at a photo of the specific type rather than carrying a procedure over from a different subject.
