A wide flat strip with a section of 0.75 x 3.2 millimeters. A ratio of over four to one gives material for planks and wide edging.

A section that is thin and at the same time wide matches what a plank or a board looks like once it is scaled down. That is exactly why this size is popular with diorama builders: one profile yields boarding, flooring, a walkway and wall cladding, and all of those elements have the same thickness they would have in reality.
The material is parted by scoring along a straightedge and snapping it. For a wooden look it pays to run coarser sandpaper along the profile before painting; a wash will then bring out the resulting grooves and the surface gains the texture of grain. It is a good idea to round the ends of the planks slightly, as sharp edges look machine-made.
When laying several planks side by side, leave the faintest gaps between them. A perfectly tight surface looks like a single piece of plastic, whereas visible joints break it up into individual boards. One piece measures 35 centimeters.
Over larger areas it pays to cut the planks in advance and lay them out before gluing anything. Assembling as you go leads to the last plank not fitting across the width and having to be cut lengthwise, which shows on the finished surface.
