The heaviest square section regularly carried in this range. Six point three millimeters on both sides turns the rod into a full-blown column, a footing under a machine or a base that the rest of a structure stands on. The material is white polystyrene, one rod is 35 cm long and is also the unit of sale.
The fundamental difference is not in the shade but in how the two materials behave. A metal part is cold, smooth and repels paint, so without an etching primer the finish can be lifted with a fingernail. Styrene, by contrast, takes paint, but the solvent in it can eat into the surface; a heavy coat of an aggressive lacquer can literally etch an edge away and the shape loses its crispness.
The practical consequence: on plastic spray lightly and in two passes, while on metal a light roughening and a sound undercoat help. When both materials meet on one model, they are painted separately and joined only once they have dried, because otherwise one of them always gets the wrong treatment.
With a section this heavy it is also worth counting on solid material through the middle, so drilling and pinning are easy and the joint holds even without further reinforcement.
When dividing a section this heavy it helps to carry the mark right around all four faces. The cut then stays in one plane and the end does not need much leveling.
