A robust H 4.8 mm high

A size at which the profile stops being a detail and becomes a structure. It comes into its own on rafters, on the posts of a warehouse or on the edging of a wooden pier, where a slimmer rod would be lost in the overall view. White polystyrene, 35 cm in one piece, the unit of sale is one rod.

Wood that has stood outside a few winters

A freshly sawn board is yellowish; a board after ten years is gray. The sun washes the dyes out of the surface, the rain flushes out the soft matter between the fibers and the fibers then stand above the surface. A shade out of a bottle has nothing to do with it. The procedure therefore begins with a light beige, continues with a very thin gray glaze and only at the end are individual boards distinguished from each other, each a little differently, so that a natural disorder arises.

The glaze is thinned more than seems sensible and is laid on repeatedly. The difference between two neighboring boards should be barely noticeable; only a view from a distance assembles it into a texture. The joints are underlined by a dark wash that runs in by itself, and a few fibers are drawn out with the tip of a brush along the length, never across.

• Suggest the fibers with a blunt point in the plastic before painting.
• Go grayer on the edges and where the rain falls.
• Darken the ends of the boards; they always soaked up the most.
• Mix neighboring pieces from one shade with a slight deviation.

The surface of the rod is smooth and does not pretend to be wood on its own. Scribing and sanding are therefore not an optional extra but the first stage of the work.

Store longer pieces lying flat. A rod leaning against a wall will bow noticeably within a few weeks and will never be straight again.
