Three tenths of a millimeter by eight tenths, that is a strip at the limit of what can still be held comfortably in the fingers. Dimensions like these are exactly what kits most often lack. They are used to add trim strips, edgings, panel frames, the stiffening of boarded structures and all those small things that give a surface its texture.
The range is based on the dimensions of construction lumber converted into the 1:87 railroad scale. This section corresponds to a board with a real dimension of roughly two and a half by seven and a half centimeters. Anyone building a structure or boarding in this scale therefore gets a ready element of the right thickness. In the scales of military vehicle kits it serves as a versatile fine strip.
A saw is pointless here. A sharp knife is laid square, the material is scored in one pass and the strip then breaks cleanly. A saw cut, on the other hand, makes fringes that are hard to level with a section this small. It can be bent along the longer side without trouble, but across it the profile snaps.
Thin capillary cement works best. The strip is laid in place, held with tweezers and the cement is then drawn into the seam with a brush, which rules out any excess squeezed out at the sides. The surface can be sanded and painted just like the rest of the model, but apply filler primer thinly so that it does not round off the fine edges. When laying a longer row of parallel strips, it helps to tape a temporary guide in place and lay one piece after another against it, because otherwise the spacing drifts apart unnoticed and the eye spots it at once on a finished model.
