About product

RAF Light Aircraft Grey BS381C/627 – an AK interactive acrylic paint

A bottled, water-thinnable acrylic paint for aircraft models. The number in the name refers to the British standard for shades, so you will recognize the paint by the same designation in technical documentation and in instructions that use this standard. Light aircraft grays are among the most frequently used British shades of the postwar period and on a model they often spread across the whole undersides or the whole airframe.

Use

  • A light shade is merciless toward surface preparation. Before you start spraying, run a finger over the seams and check for sanding scratches against the light; they stand out more under a light gray than under a dark color.
  • Choose a light base coat. Over a light gray or white primer the shade behaves predictably, whereas over a black base the resulting tone shifts and more coats are needed.
  • A light gray is a rewarding base for modulation: preshading of the engraved lines in a darker color shows through it partly and only needs a gentle overspray.
  • Touch up only once it has fully cured. A fresh thin coat of a light color smears easily into an uneven patch when painted over.

Who the paint is for

For builders of British aircraft who work to the shades of the BS 381C standard and want the shade ready mixed. It is an acrylic thinned with water or with acrylic thinner, not a lacquer. The maker's Real Colors lacquer range carries the same name and the same standard number; that one is thinned with lacquer thinner and is not mixed with this paint.

Shake thoroughly before use. Ventilate and protect your airways when spraying, close the bottle and do not store it in frost. Not a toy.

FAQ

It is the designation of the shade under the British standard. You will find the same number with other paint makers as well, even if they name it differently.

A light gray or a white one. Over a dark base a light shade shifts in tone and needs more coats.

No. This is an acrylic thinned with water; the lacquer range has a different chemistry, its own thinner and behaves differently when oversprayed. They cannot be interchanged.

The surest way is to go over the area with gloss varnish, lay the decal onto it and only then adjust the sheen as needed.
