UBBE “THE GREAT PAGAN” 75MM

Ubbe The Great Pagan - a 75 mm figure, Abteilung 502

A figure model in resin 75 mm tall. The figure of 75 mm describes the size of the finished figure, not a scale - the 75 mm format is a category of its own among figure painters, lying between small toy soldiers and large busts. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, so the final impression rests on the modeler's work.

The subject

The figure refers to Ubbe, one of the leaders linked with the great Scandinavian army that operated in Anglo-Saxon England from the 860s. The sources of the period speak of him only briefly and part of his life story belongs more to the later saga and chronicle tradition than to securely documented history. The equipment of northern warriors of that time included mail or quilted armor, a shield and a helmet of simple shape; the coloring of clothing came from plant dyes, so muted shades are more faithful to the period on a figure than saturated variety.

Building and painting tips

Wash the castings in lukewarm water with dish soap, so that no mold release agent is left on the surface. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw and sand the cut; protect your airways while sanding resin. Join the parts with super glue, and on the arms and the weapon an inner pin of wire helps. After degreasing, apply a thin primer. In the 75 mm format acrylics applied in thin coats with gradual brightening of the edges work well, and oil paints can be added on skin and leather for smoother transitions. Mail armor comes alive with a dark undercoat and a careful dry brush.
