Corrugated sheet metal at a pitch of 1.5 mm and a depth of 0.50 mm. It corresponds to a reduction of around one to fifty, that is, to buildings in one to forty-eight.

A white sheet measuring 150 by 300 millimeters, with a transverse corrugation at a pitch of 1.5 mm and a depth of 0.50 mm. The corrugation has a rounded section, not a trapezoidal one, which matches the older sheets of galvanized plate.
Choosing the coarseness of the corrugation is easier than justifying it. The real profile has a pitch of seventy-six millimeters; divided by 1.5 that works out at roughly one to fifty, so the sheet suits buildings in one to forty-eight and will take a somewhat greater reduction as well.
It is more instructive to look at what happens when the choice goes wrong. If the same sheet covered a shed built in one to seventy-two, the corrugation would mean one hundred and eight millimeters, that is, half as much again as any profile actually made. The error does not show as the wrong sheet metal, though, but as the wrong building: the eye reads the size of a structure from the elements whose real dimensions it knows, and an oversized corrugation tells it that the shelter is smaller than it was built. The same holds the other way round; a finer sheet turns a barn into an industrial hall.
The rounded section comes in useful when building barrels and tanks, because the sheet bends more easily across the corrugation than along it. To bend it, just lay it on a soft base and pull it over a cylinder.
A fence of corrugated sheet is a rewarding subject precisely because it does not have to be made straight. Cut the panels to different heights, lean some of them, leave one peeling away from a post and cut the edges irregularly. Set posts of square strip at unequal spacings and let one lean out of line. A corrugated surface also lets you shorten a panel exactly in the valley of a corrugation, so that even a cut edge looks factory-finished.
