Decals in 1:144 scale for three Liberators of the 343rd Bomb Squadron, whose crews named their machines after characters from Snow White.
Responsibility details are not available.
The 343rd Bomb Squadron belonged to the 98th Bomb Group, nicknamed the Pyramiders for its African base. From 1942 the crews painted characters from Disney's Snow White on the nose, and the whole set came to be known by them. These were among the machines that in August 1943 flew at low altitude against the Romanian refineries and paid for it with heavy losses.
The sheet covers three particular aircraft. The nickname Dopey is worked up in two forms, because it was carried in turn by the airframes with serial numbers 41-23781 and 42-40268. They are joined by Prince Charming with number 42-40082 and Doc with number 41-11921. Besides the nose art itself, the sheet also carries the matching national insignia and fuselage numbers.
The B-24D was the first mass-production version of the Liberator and is told from the later machines by its glazed nose without a powered turret. Over the Mediterranean it flew from dusty field airfields, so in photographs it tends to appear with sand filters and scuffed leading edges. The artwork of the nose paintings on the sheet is drawn to the shape of such a nose, so it does not have to be bent over a turret frame.
The printing is carried on a thin backing, which matters at a scale this small: a heavy layer would leave a visible step on the rounded fuselage of the bomber. The area under the decal should be smooth and glossy, ideally polished with clear coat, so that no air gets under the film and the paint beneath it does not go dull. Once dry, the whole thing is given a matte clear coat, which hides the edges of the carrier film.
The package is reckoned for kits of the B-24D bomber in 1:144 scale. Plastic parts and paints are obtained separately.
