An injection-molded plastic kit of the strategic transport aircraft C-5B Galaxy in 1:144 from Roden. The kit rests on a modern mold: gray and clear plastic, decals for a US Air Force machine and illustrated instructions. The key piece of information for planning a display case: 1:144 is a small scale, but the C-5 is such an enormous aircraft that the model has a span of over 45 cm and a length of over 50 cm, so it takes up markedly more room than many a fighter in 1:48. The model is conceived as a closed airframe; the kit does not deal with the cargo hold. The build is not demanding in the number of parts, but the large surfaces of the fuselage and the wings call for patience in filling and sanding the seams.
The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy is among the largest aircraft in the world and is the backbone of the strategic air transport of the US Air Force; it can carry even equipment that other transports cannot take. You will recognize it by its high-mounted wing, its T tail and above all by its cargo doors at the nose as well as at the tail: the whole nose lifts upwards, so that the load can be taken on and off by driving right through the aircraft. The C-5B version is a newer production series with a strengthened structure and modernized avionics.
Glue the fuselage and the wings with a thin cement for plastic and fill the seams straight away; on surfaces this large and smooth every seam shows. Apply a primer before painting and inspect the surface thoroughly against the light. Spray the gray US Air Force finishes with an airbrush in thin coats; the large size of the model calls for more paint than you are used to in 1:144. Apply the large decals over a coat of gloss varnish and with the help of a softener, so that they settle into the engraving. Because of the size, think in advance about where you will put the model and how you will handle it.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
