A set of masking pieces for painting the road wheels of the BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicle and the BMP-3E export version. It is not a model or a resin replacement for the wheels — the masks serve to let the rubber tire band be sprayed in a shade of its own with the border against the rim staying sharp. The set is cut for the kit from Trumpeter; with another treatment of the same vehicle the wheel diameters need not agree.
The BMP-3 differs from the older BMP-1 in the layout of its drive to begin with: the engine is at the rear and the drive sprocket is set back, while the idler wheel sits at the front. There are six road wheels per side and they are noticeably more substantial than on the BMP-1, with return rollers to go with them. The vehicle is built as an amphibian, with hydropneumatic suspension that allows the ride height to be changed — on a model that means the position of the wheels against the hull is something you choose, and that the running gear cannot be hidden. The wheels are large enough for a botched rubber border to be visible on them from an ordinary distance, and at the same time profiled enough that a brush is awkward to guide around their circumference.
On the BMP-3 it is worth finishing and aligning the suspension arms first, because how the model sits on its base depends on them. Only then does it make sense to start on painting the wheels. The step with the masks thus falls between a finished running gear and the fitting of the tracks: spray the wheels in the base shade away from the hull, fit the masks once the paint has cured, add the tire bands and only then fit them to the arms. Anyone who reverses the order will inevitably scratch the lower part of the wheels while handling the tracks.
This is a masking accessory, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
