This set of six ultralight rocks from the manufacturer MAiM is the basic building block, quite literally, of any natural terrain. The rock formations are listed in 1:35 scale, but the scale is universal: a rock has no fixed dimensions, so the same pieces will serve just as well in scenes in 1:48, 1:24 and larger. That is exactly what makes them an accessory that never goes to waste in a diorama builder's supplies.
The ultralight construction has a practical advantage: large rock blocks do not weigh a base down and are easy to cut and sand to the shape you need. The rocks can be partly sunk into terrain material, grouped into a rock outcrop, laid along a watercourse or used as rubble and boulders in an urban scene. Six pieces allow compositions from a single boulder up to a whole rocky stretch.
Prime the rocks in a dark gray or brown-gray base, then lay lighter shades on with a dry brush from above, because the direction of the light has to agree with the rest of the scene. An oil or acrylic wash will bring out the cracks and the fissures, and pigments in the color of the surrounding soil will settle a rock into the terrain so that it does not look merely placed there. At the foot, add fine grit and static grass.
The rocks are supplied unpainted, meant to be painted and worked into terrain. Paints and binders are not included in the package.
