About product

US gunner with the BAR automatic rifle, 1:35

A resin figure in 1:35 scale from the Polish maker Mantis Miniatures. It represents an American infantryman of the Second World War period armed with the BAR automatic rifle, a weapon that filled the role of light fire support within a section. The figure is supplied as an unpainted casting that has to be cleaned up, assembled and painted. It is not a finished collector's model.

The real subject

The BAR automatic rifle was the carrier of firepower in American infantry sections: it was worked by one soldier who, because of the weight of the weapon and its magazines, carried different gear from the rest of the section, above all a special magazine belt. That shows in the modeling of the figure as well: the silhouette of a gunner with a BAR is different from that of a rifleman and is recognizable at a glance in a diorama. The figure fits scenes from both the European and the Pacific theater.

Tips for working and painting

First wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water, as remaining mold release agent otherwise prevents the paint from adhering. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a sharp knife; never break them off. Sand wet and with respiratory protection. Glue with cyanoacrylate, as cement for plastic has no effect on resin. Lay on a thin primer and only then the paints. Build the olive green uniform from a darker base, highlight the surfaces and edges and finish with a light wash in the folds. Set the leather straps and the wooden parts of the weapon apart in both shade and sheen: matte cloth, semi-gloss leather and smooth wood give the figure depth. Build the face and hands with glazes in thin layers.

Who the figure is for

  • Builders of Second World War dioramas in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers adding American infantry to their equipment
  • Figure collectors interested in the gear and armament of infantry sections
  • Modelers with experience of resin and of painting figures

The figure is supplied as an unassembled and unpainted resin casting. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package.
