The set holds photo-etched metal parts intended to detail a plastic model of the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid CV-11 in 1:350 scale. Photo-etched sheet is an order of magnitude thinner than injection-molded plastic, so the parts that have to read as delicate on a model look considerably more convincing once replaced. The manufacturer is the Czech company Eduard, which has long devoted itself to photo-etched accessories. This item is the first part of a multi-part series: further separately sold parts exist for the same ship in the same scale, so one purchase does not cover the whole model.
The USS Intrepid CV-11 was an aircraft carrier of the Essex class, that is of the most numerous class of American attack carriers of the Second World War. She entered service in 1943 and operated in the Pacific. In the postwar years she went through extensive modernizations, which changed the arrangement of the flight deck and the superstructure, and she served on in the role of an attack and later an anti-submarine carrier. Today she is a museum ship. It is exactly because of the rebuilds that the appearance of the ship differs markedly between individual periods, which matters while building a model: both the accessories and the color scheme should be chosen according to the particular date you want to capture.
Photo-etched parts are separated from the fret with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, not with nippers, which bend the sheet. A simple bending jig or two razor blades come in useful for bending long straight edges. They glue with super glue applied in a minimal quantity, or else with epoxy where you need time to true a part up. It is advisable to degrease the metal before painting and to spray it with a primer intended for metal, otherwise the paint flakes off while handling. With ships in this scale it pays to fit the photo-etched features only once the basic painting of the hull and the deck is finished, so that the fragile parts are not exposed to handling needlessly long.
It is not a kit of the ship. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
