About product

Metal barrels of the British 15-inch gun, 1:350 scale (Flyhawk)

Eight turned metal barrels for the main armament of models of large Royal Navy vessels of the Second World War period. A caliber of 15 inches corresponds to roughly 381 mm. The set is an accessory for a plastic kit: the metal barrels replace the parts from the mold in the gun turrets and remove their two usual shortcomings, that is the lengthwise trace of the mold parting line and the blind muzzle. The metal part is also perfectly straight, which on a long barrel in 1:350 is clearly noticeable from every view of the model.

The real gun

The fifteen-inch gun was the main armament of a number of British heavy surface vessels and was used from the First World War right to the end of the Second. The guns were mounted in pairs in rotating turrets, so the count of eight barrels in the set corresponds to four twin turrets. The turrets were modernized over the ships' service, but the barrels themselves remained the main recognition feature of the silhouette.

Fitting to a model

The procedure is simple but calls for care. Cut the plastic barrel off right at the turret mask, sand the remainder level and drill the hole with a micro drill exactly to the diameter of the pin on the metal part. Drill slowly and dry, or the plastic will tear. Glue the metal barrels in with cyanoacrylate glue or epoxy. Degrease the parts before spraying and use a primer for metal. If you are finishing the model with a different elevation on the individual turrets, level the angles while the glue is still setting; with metal a barrel can no longer be bent afterwards.

Who the set suits

  • Builders of British warship models in 1:350.
  • Modelers who want drilled barrel muzzles without hand-drilling the plastic.
  • Collectors finishing a model for a display case.
  • Anyone building a ship with twin turrets of the main caliber.

The set is an accessory for a model, not a kit in its own right. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

According to the name eight pieces, which corresponds to four twin turrets.

Approximately 381 mm. British naval artillery is commonly given in inches in period sources, which is why it has stayed that way in the name of the set.

Cut the plastic barrel off at the turret mask, open the hole out with a micro drill to the diameter of the pin and glue the metal part in with cyanoacrylate glue or epoxy.

The particular kit is not stated here. Before buying, compare the scale and the diameter of the barrel mounting in the turrets of your model.
