About product

Ki-61 Hien Fabric Effect Masks in 1:72 Scale (Airone Hobby)

This set of self-adhesive, machine-cut masks is used to spray a fabric covering effect onto a model of the Japanese Ki-61 Hien fighter in 1:72 scale. It is not an airplane model and it is not a decal sheet: it is a painting aid that adds a fine pattern of ribs and the bays between them to a finished paint job, the way a fabric-covered surface looks on the real aircraft.

The real subject

The Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien was a Japanese fighter of the Second World War, unusual among contemporary Japanese types for its liquid-cooled V12 engine and slim fuselage; the Allies used the code name Tony for it. On aircraft of this generation the rudders, elevators and ailerons had a metal frame covered with fabric. The covering sagged slightly between the ribs, so a regular rhythm of ribs and shallow bays shows on the surface. In small scales this is a detail that gives the surface of the model scale credibility far more cheaply than replacing parts.

Usage tips

Apply the masks only to a fully cured base color, otherwise the paint will lift when they are removed. Clean the surface of dust and grease first and press the mask down with a soft stick or tweezers all around its edge. Spray thinly thinned paint in a slightly darker or lighter tone, at low pressure and in several light coats, perpendicular to the surface: the less paint, the finer the result. Remove the mask shortly after the paint has dried, while the coat is still flexible, and pull it at an angle over the edge, not straight up. Finally, blend the transitions with a light overspray of the base color and seal the whole surface with varnish before applying the decals.

Who the set is for

  • modelers who build Japanese fighters in 1:72 scale
  • anyone interested in a realistic finish on the moving surfaces without cutting and filling
  • builders who are already at home with an airbrush and with light coats
  • collectors who want to set their models apart by the finish of the surface

This is a painting aid. The model, the paints and the varnish are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is a set of masks for painting, used on an already built model of the Ki-61 Hien in 1:72 scale.

Yes, the set is designed for spraying light, thinly thinned coats. A brush can hardly give a transition as fine as this.

Count on single use rather than repeated use: the tack drops after the first removal and the mask then seats less well all around its edge.

Shortly after the paint has dried, while the coat is still flexible. On a fully cured finish the paint under the edge of the mask may lift with it.
