An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:400 scale from the Polish maker Mirage Hobby. The real subject is Hiddensee, a small missile ship of the Soviet project 1241, known in the West under the designation Tarantul I. The package holds plastic parts and decals that allow the ship to be built in service with the German Navy and with the US Navy, as the name of the product indicates. The paints, the glue and a stand are not included.
The ships of project 1241 belonged to the last generation of Soviet missile boats and corvettes. They concentrated unusually heavy strike armament on a small hull: anti-ship guided missiles in launch canisters along the sides of the superstructure, a universal 76 mm gun on the bow and gun-based close-in weapon systems. The combination of high speed and heavy missiles made them a dangerous opponent in enclosed seas, typically in the Baltic. This particular ship was built in the Soviet Union and served first with the East German Navy. After the unification of Germany the German Navy took it over under the name Hiddensee, and it was then handed over to the United States for a thorough evaluation of Soviet technology. Today it survives as a museum ship in the USA, which makes it one of the few accessible units of its type.
The most conspicuous features of the model are the side canisters of the anti-ship missiles and the large radar above the bridge: it is these parts that decide how true the silhouette looks, so seat them carefully and on the centerline. Separate the small parts with a saw rather than with nippers, so that they do not crack. Prime the whole thing, then lay down the base gray shade; it is a good idea to shade the decks and the superstructure a little darker, so that the model does not look flat. Use a gloss varnish under the decals and even the surface out with a matte one once dry. Keep the weathering restrained: on an active warship a fine wash into the details and a light pass of the dry brush along the edges are enough.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
