This detail set from Metallic Details replaces the exhaust sections of the engines of the MiG-25 model in the RB and RBT versions with more accurate resin castings in 1:48 scale. The set is fairly extensive, as the nozzles are built up from several parts, so the internal structure and the thin edges of the segments that injection-molded plastic cannot manage are captured as well. It is an aftermarket accessory and the aircraft model is not included in the package. The castings are shaped for the ICM kit.
The MiG-25 is a Soviet heavy twin-engine aircraft designed for high-speed flight at great altitude. An airframe largely of welded steel, twin vertical tail surfaces and massive side intakes were the answer to fast, high-flying targets. The RB and RBT versions are reconnaissance and bomber modifications: they carry reconnaissance equipment in the nose and differ in external fit from the fighter versions. On this aircraft the nozzles of both engines form a prominent part of the tail and are fully on show from behind.
Wash the castings in warm soapy water, cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutting disc and level the mating faces by wet sanding with respiratory protection. It is bonded with super glue (cyanoacrylate). Assemble and paint the nozzles away from the model and glue them on only at the end. A metallic look comes out best on a smooth base: a primer, fine sanding, a metallic shade and then toning of the individual segments. Darken the inside with a wash and soot, and suggest heat staining on the outer surface with heavily thinned paint applied in thin coats.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
