An accessory for the 1:48 model of the Spitfire Mk IX from the Hasegawa brand. It contains pre-cut film for the glazing, masks for spraying the insignia and a pair of turned weapons of twenty millimeters caliber together with the bulged fairings.
Responsibility details are not available.
The British Mk IX is a textbook example of how a makeshift solution becomes the main type. A stronger engine was squeezed into the fuselage of the Mk V, a longer cowling appeared at the front and under it a second radiator under the wing, so the lower silhouette, symmetrical until then, changed. Pilots valued above all the fact that the machine at last climbed and held its speed at the altitudes where they had until then been chasing in vain.
A molded part is formed in a two-part mold, and where the two halves meet a longitudinal line is left on it. On a flat component it is sanded away in a few seconds; on a thin cylinder it is different: sanding easily turns a round cross-section into an angular one and the weapon then looks like a flat strip. A turned part does not know that problem, because it is formed by rotation about its own axis and is perfectly round all the way round. On a model that shows in the reflection, which runs smoothly along the barrel instead of breaking at the edge left by a sanded seam.
The package contains neither a kit nor decals. Anyone who wants to work with paint chipping after spraying has the advantage that the finished insignia are made of paint and take the same treatment as the surrounding camouflage. British machines are moreover often built with an open canopy, so the inner framing is visible too, and the film allows for it.
