An injection-molded plastic kit of the modern Japanese Asahi class destroyer with the hull number DD-119. The 1:700 scale has long been the most widespread one for warships, because it makes it possible to display even large units at a reasonable size and to build comparable fleets. The manufacturer is Aoshima, a Japanese brand with a broad naval program.
Asahi is the lead unit of the destroyer class of the same name of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and she was commissioned in the second half of the 2010s. In design she follows on from the preceding Akizuki class but she is optimized above all for antisubmarine warfare. The ship, over 150 meters long, uses a combined propulsion system with gas turbines and electric transmission of power, which reduces noise, a property that is fundamental for antisubmarine work. The armament consists of a main-caliber gun on the bow, a vertical launching system, antiship missiles, torpedo tubes and a close-in defense system, and at the stern there is a hangar and a landing deck for a shipboard helicopter.
In 1:700 scale cleanliness of work decides the outcome, so cut the parts off with nippers and sand the marks left by the gates before you glue them. If you are building the model in the split waterline configuration, check at the dry fit stage whether the joint at the seam sits properly. It is ideal to spray the whole hull and the superstructure in the base gray shade before the final assembly, because later neither a brush nor a nozzle will reach into the tight spots. The deck markings and the fine detail can be managed with a thin brush, and a very heavily thinned dark wash suits accentuating the panels and openings. The masts and the fine antennas are fragile in this scale, so fit them right at the very end.
