An injection-molded plastic kit of the British destroyer HMS Lance in her 1941 state, in 1:700 scale, from Flyhawk. The model has a full hull, that is, including the underwater part, and besides the plastic sprues the box holds photo-etched brass and decals. This maker's molds are among the finest available in the small naval scale and, together with the photo-etched parts supplied, they allow a very high level of detail.
HMS Lance was an L-class destroyer of the Royal Navy, a class whose units entered service at the start of the 1940s. They were modern ships for their day, with enclosed gun turrets that offered the crew better protection than the older open mountings. Because standard gun sets were in short supply, some ships of the class received a different main armament with a pair of dual-purpose guns in each turret, which is a recognition feature of their silhouette. The L-class ships served in demanding conditions, above all in the Mediterranean, where they escorted convoys and operated against enemy shipping.
The small scale puts the stress on clean work. Cut the parts off with a sharp blade and sand the cut faces carefully. Glue the photo-etched railings and ladders with superglue applied on a pinhead, otherwise you will flood the detail around them. Spray the hull and the superstructure separately and only then assemble them. Apply the paint in thin coats so that the engraved deck detail does not disappear. A fine dark wash in the recesses and very careful drybrushing on the edges help at the end. If you want to display the model on the water, the full hull can be covered over with a base imitating the sea.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
