A plastic kit of the Japanese heavy cruiser Mikuma as she appeared in 1942, in the 1:700 ship scale. The ship belonged to the Mogami class.
Responsibility details are not available.
Mikuma was the second unit of the Japanese Mogami cruiser class. She entered service in the second half of the 1930s, and her original 15.5 cm guns were replaced before the war with 20.3 cm guns, which turned a light cruiser into a heavy one. She carried the 1942 appearance that this kit captures at the end of her service: in June 1942 she was lost during the fighting at Midway.
It is a plastic kit of a warship in 1:700 scale, which is the standard for large surface units. At this scale the finished model stays manageable in size and fits onto an ordinary shelf complete with a case, even though the subject is a large warship. The number of parts, the breakdown of the superstructures and the extent of the enclosed decals differ between individual releases; what is binding is the instruction sheet enclosed in the box.
It is practical to paint the hull and the superstructures before the final assembly, as the details are then considerably easier to reach. Separate small parts such as the boats, the cranes and the gun barrels with a sharp blade over a mat, so that they do not get lost. The deck lines and the ship's railings will stand out after gentle toning with a darker shade. Only start painting once the parts have been degreased in lukewarm soapy water.
The set is for modelers interested in the Imperial Japanese Navy of the Second World War and in ship models in general. Given the size of the parts it calls for patience and fine tools. Paints, glue and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
