About product

HMAS Vampire 1:700 — a waterline kit, Tamiya

An injection-molded plastic kit of the destroyer HMAS Vampire in 1:700 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Tamiya, part of the well-known Waterline range. The model is conceived as a waterline version, that is without the lower part of the hull below the waterline — it can be set on a flat surface as if afloat, or placed in a diorama with water. The rotating guns and torpedo tubes make it easier to bring the finished scene to life. Decals and a sheet of flags are included. The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

Vampire was a destroyer built in Britain back in the First World War and handed over to the Royal Australian Navy in 1933. She served in the Mediterranean, later joined Force Z off Singapore and in December 1941 escorted the battleship Prince of Wales and the battlecruiser Repulse. After they were sunk by Japanese aircraft she rescued survivors. In April 1942 Vampire was sunk by Japanese carrier-based aircraft off Ceylon together with the aircraft carrier Hermes. She is thus among the ships that bore the brunt of the first months of the war in the Indian Ocean.

Building and painting tips

Glue the tiny photo-etched and plastic parts with liquid cement for plastic applied drop by drop. We recommend spraying the hull and the decks with a base primer before detailing and painting with an airbrush. Consider buying photo-etched railings and nets for a finer look, and place the model on a small stand or in a water scene.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of warships in 1:700 scale and of the Waterline range
  • For anyone interested in the history of the Royal Australian Navy and the war in the Indian Ocean
  • For modelers who like to complete ships with photo-etched parts
  • For builders of naval dioramas on the water

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is the waterline version — the model captures the hull above the waterline. You can set it on a flat surface as if afloat, or place it in a diorama with water.

The basic contents are plastic parts, decals and a sheet of flags. Photo-etched railings and nets are not a standard part of every package and can be bought separately as an accessory.

The build is manageable even for the less experienced, but the small 1:700 scale means tiny parts. We recommend liquid cement for plastic, tweezers and airbrush painting.
