A ship kit in the most widespread collector scale of 1:700 from Dragon. The model is built from injection-molded polystyrene parts, glued with modeling cement for plastic and painted only once the main assemblies are together. In 1:700 this is a large ship, so the finished model takes up a fair piece of shelf and stands up well to being completed with photo-etched railings.
Tarawa was the lead ship of the class of the same name of amphibious assault ships of the US Navy and entered service in 1976. She combines a full-length flight deck for helicopters and V/STOL aircraft with a floodable well deck at the stern, from which landing craft put out. Besides aircraft and landing craft she carries a landing force, stores and hospital facilities, so she can support an amphibious operation on her own. The silhouette with a large island offset to starboard and an open flight deck is characteristic of this class.
First decide whether you will build the model as a full hull or cut it down to the waterline and set it into a sea — the whole sequence depends on that. Paint the flight deck separately from the sides of the hull and handle the markings on the deck with masking or decals, not freehand with a brush. Glue the fine superstructure and masts on at the end, ideally with a cyanoacrylate glue with a long open time. Bring the gray coat of the hull to life with a light brightening of the large areas, a thin wash along the welds and rust marks under the drains. Photo-etched railings and ladders are not a matter of course with this kind of kit — if you want them, reckon with an accessory set.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
