An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi. It covers the F-35B version, that is the variant intended for short takeoff and vertical landing. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, on sprues, with instructions and a sheet of decals.
The F-35 Lightning II is a single-seat single-engine combat aircraft built with reduced radar signature in mind, with internal weapons bays and extensively integrated sensors. The B version differs from the others in its propulsion arrangement for short takeoff and vertical landing: behind the cockpit sits a vertical lift fan driven by a shaft from the main engine, and the exhaust nozzle of the engine swivels downward. Side nozzles for roll control in the hover complete the arrangement. This configuration allows operation from short sites and from ships without a catapult; the trade-off is a smaller volume of internal tanks and a different distribution of weight. The external hallmarks of the B version are the doors above the fan and a different treatment of the fuselage spine.
On aircraft with reduced radar signature a smooth surface is crucial — fill the seams carefully and sand them down, so that a continuous skin is left. Restore the engraved panel lines with a scriber after sanding. Finish the cockpit before closing the fuselage and mask the canopy. Spray the base gray finish with an airbrush in thin coats and shade the individual panels gently, so that the surface does not read flat. Varnish with a gloss clear coat before the decals and unify with a matte one once dry. You can show the fan doors and the swiveled nozzle in the open position, and the model then reads far more dynamically in a display case — but check the arrangement in the instructions.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
