About product

A 1:72 vacuum-formed cockpit canopy for the Me P1103

This item is not a kit. It is a replacement clear cockpit canopy from the Czech maker Brengun, vacuum-drawn from thin clear film and intended for the plastic kit of the Me P1103 aircraft in 1:72 scale named in the product title.

Why a vacuum-formed canopy instead of an injected part

An injected clear part has to keep a certain wall thickness because of the technology. In a small scale it then reads as thick glass, refracts light, distorts the view into the cockpit and its frames come out too heavy. Vacuum-drawn film is an order of magnitude thinner, optically clean and also allows an open canopy position: once cut, the edge stays thin and true. A thin film also means that the interior you invested time in is finally really visible.

Tips for working it

A canopy is handled differently from plastic. First trace the outline with an alcohol marker so that it is visible in the clear film. Cut it out with a margin using curved scissors, or score round it with a scalpel and break it off. Sand the seating edge down gradually with fine abrasive paper laid flat on a board, in a circular motion and with constant test fitting on the fuselage: take off little and often, as the material disappears faster than you expect. It is glued with a cement for clear plastic or with white glue, which will not dull the surroundings. Scratches can be polished out with abrasive compound. Super glue and nitro thinner will fog the film, so avoid them around the cockpit.

Who the canopy is for

  • modelers who want to build the cockpit in the open position
  • builders who dislike the thick clear part from the box
  • a replacement for a scratched or lost original canopy
  • more experienced modelers: cutting out and sanding call for patience

This is an accessory to a kit, not a model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

A cement for clear plastic or white glue. The fumes of super glue will fog the film and a dulled surface cannot be rescued without polishing.

Vacuum-formed canopies are often supplied in more than one piece precisely because the first attempt at cutting out may not work. Check the particular number before ordering.

It is a replacement part. It replaces the clear canopy from the kit; it will not replace the model itself.
