The P-51D is the late and most widespread version of the Mustang, recognizable by its lowered fuselage spine and bubble canopy. The Packard V-1650 engine, a license-built Merlin, gave it performance at the altitudes where American fighters had until then run out of breath, and a large fuel load gave it the range needed for long escort flights. A characteristic feature is the deep radiator duct under the fuselage, whose shape is among the things that most decide the fidelity of the silhouette on a model.
The key operation is wet sanding. Resin dust is fine and irritating and is not to be inhaled, so wet the abrasive paper and rinse the surface as you go, or sand with respiratory protection. Proceed from coarser paper to fine and check the surface often against the light; resin comes away faster than plastic and over-sanding cannot be undone. After sanding, wash the parts so that no slurry stays in the structure, and let them dry. Only then the base and the paint; a smoothly sanded surface is the condition for the polished metallic shades that are commonly imitated on Mustangs.
The set is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a stand-alone model. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package.
