The kit from the Japanese manufacturer Hasegawa captures the UH-60J rescue helicopter in the version with added equipment, designated by the suffix SP, in a box devoted to a machine in a naval camouflage finish. It is a classic injection-molded plastic model meant to be glued and painted. The number of parts, the extent of the decal sheet and the marking options are given on the packaging.
The UH-60J is the Japanese search and rescue version of the proven Sikorsky UH-60 helicopter, built for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force under license in Japan itself. Compared with the transport Black Hawk it has markedly added equipment for long flights over the sea: a weather radar in the nose, a rescue hoist by the right-hand door, extended equipment for navigation and search and the ability to carry large auxiliary tanks. The machines serve for lifting crews and people from the water surface and from hard-to-reach terrain and are stationed at bases across the Japanese islands. Their finishes changed during service from striking rescue colors to subdued schemes for work over the sea.
The helicopter has a large glazed cabin, so it pays to start with the interior and only then close the fuselage up. Mask the glazing before spraying, ideally with strips of masking tape or with ready-made masks. Glue with a thin cement for plastic that wicks into the joint; the thin parts of the hoist and the antennas can be reinforced with cyanoacrylate glue. Apply a primer before painting, as it reveals the remains of parting lines. Spray the camouflage transitions with an airbrush at low pressure, lay the decals on a glossy surface and seal the whole with a matte or semi-gloss varnish according to how weathered a machine you want.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
