About product

1:32 Mitsubishi A6M5 Reisen masking set (Dead Design)

An accessory to a plastic kit in 1:32 scale, not a model of the aircraft. The masks are cut to the outlines of the subject, so all you have to do is transfer them to the part and press them down. The set is tied to the A6M5 version, which differs from the older machines of the range in the shape of the wingtips and in details of the airframe. The extent of the set, the number of pieces and the material of the carrier are not stated here.

The real subject

The A6M5 was the most numerous production version of the Mitsubishi A6M Reisen carrier-based fighter. Against the older machines it received a shortened wing with rounded tips and no folding mechanism, and individual exhaust stacks led out along the sides of the fuselage. The rest of the airframe, including the characteristic long cockpit glazing and the radial engine, stayed close to the earlier versions. For the modeler that means masks cut for one version of the range need not fit another exactly.

Masking and painting

Taking the mask off matters as much as sticking it on. Do not pull the film straight up but slowly and at a shallow angle back over itself, ideally away from a freshly sprayed line rather than across it. A pull straight up lifts the paint at the edge and the line frays. It helps to get under a corner of the mask with the point of a toothpick or a wooden stick rather than with a fingernail, because a fingernail leaves a mark and degreasing it under the finish is no longer possible. With masks of lower tack it is a good idea to stick them once to the back of your hand and peel them off before use, which reduces the tack so that the film does not tear the base away with it. If the line does suffer after all, put it right with a fine brush and the same shade rather than a new coat from the airbrush.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the most numerous version of the Reisen at a large scale
  • Modelers who want a crisp line without touching up by hand
  • Those who work with an airbrush and with a spray can
  • Builders putting several versions of the range side by side

This is a masking set, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

Stick it once to the back of your hand and peel it off. The tack drops and the film does not tear the base color away with it.

The set is tied to the A6M5 version. The older versions of the range have different wingtips and other differences of airframe, so do not expect universal use.

It is not. It is a masking accessory to a plastic kit in 1:32 scale.
