A sheet of dense foam ten millimeters thick in A4 format. It does not crumble, it holds a sharp edge and it takes deep carving. A centimeter of thickness means that out of a single sheet you can create a rock face with pronounced relief, a deep cleft or stepped terrain without having to glue several layers on top of each other.
It is used for rock massifs, for slopes and steps of terrain, for ruined walls with thick masonry, for diorama bases and for models where the thickness of a wall shows, for example on brickwork or on window reveals. It also comes into its own as a core that is then faced with thinner sheets with finer texture.
When cutting a thicker sheet you run the knife several times along the same track and go deeper step by step; trying to cut through in one go leads the blade astray. Scribe the texture with a blunt point and leave the edges irregular. Before painting, stiffen the surface with PVA glue or filler. Try solvent-based paints on an offcut.
