An injection-molded plastic kit of the M198 towed howitzer from I Love Kit. The 1:16 scale makes it a sizeable display model on which features that blend together in smaller scales are easy to read — the split trails of the carriage, the firing platform, the hydraulics, the sighting station and the structure of the cradle. The model works as a piece in its own right and equally well as the centerpiece of a scene with figures and an ammunition carrier.
The M198 is a towed 155 mm howitzer of Western design, introduced in the last quarter of the twentieth century as a considerably lighter and more mobile replacement for older systems of the same caliber. It is built for towing behind a truck and for air transport; in the firing position it rests on the opened trails of the carriage and a folding firing platform. Characteristic features are the long barrel with a muzzle brake and the open framework construction, thanks to which practically the whole mechanism is visible on the model.
Geometry is the key: the opened trails of the carriage, the firing platform and the wheels have to sit so that the finished model rests on all its bearing points. The surest way is to build on a flat board and to check the fit dry before the glue sets. Leave the barrel and the cradle separable until they are painted. Modern American vehicles are typically given a single-color matte coat, which needs to be brought to life — go over the edges dry with a lighter shade, run a dark wash into the recesses and add dust pigments underneath. Lettering and warning markings settle better on an intermediate gloss clear coat, and a matte coat then unifies the whole.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
