The manufacturer lists it as protective, and it offers the straight variant of the same rendering under a neighboring part number. The package contains the blade alone, so check before buying that it fits the handle you use.
A curved edge is used in modeling where a straight blade meets the work only with its tip or at a point: on rounded surfaces, in transitions and when cleaning up rounded edges. Cutting and scraping can be carried out with a smooth stroke while the tool follows the shape of the part, so the surface is gouged less and the edge stays smooth.
Work on a cutting mat and make the stroke away from your body, in several shallow passes instead of one heavy one. Clamp the blade firmly in the handle so that it does not turn in the holder. Do not use it as a lever or for prying parts off, because steel breaks without warning when twisted. As soon as it stops cutting smoothly, replace it; a blunt blade slips, and that is exactly when damage happens to the model and to your hand. Put the used piece into a closed container and store unused blades dry so that they do not corrode.
It suits a modeler who already has a cutting handle and wants to add a curved edge to it for work on rounded shapes. The handle, the cutting mat and other tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
