The CD68 type is among the best known products of the Milan foundry. It carries five prominent arms converging into a robust center, which with competition cars was an essential requirement: an arm had to withstand a blow from a stone without the rim falling apart. It was in precisely this form that the wheel appeared on the Italian cars which in the seventies were collecting placings on gravel and on tarmac alike.
What is essential is the shoes. Instead of a road tire with a fine tread pattern you get a tire with a competition pattern, that is with coarser blocks and a more pronounced shoulder. The difference is legible at once on a finished model and changes the whole sense of the car: the same body comes across on competition shoes as prepared and nervous, and on road ones as calm.
It aims at the builder of a competition car, whether it is a show piece with carefully shaded dirt or a series build for a collection of rally specials. The assumption is that you already know what a car looks like after a special stage, because it is exactly the dirtying that makes up most of the resulting impression with competition shoes. For a complete beginner it is a rather ambitious set, though technically it calls for nothing complicated.
The blocks of the tread pattern deserve attention of their own. A base black looks three-dimensional until a lightly dusty shade enters it, drawn with a dry brush across the edges of the blocks. On the sides scuffing and stickers appear, and on the rim scratches from stones. With a gravel build the dirt holds mainly behind the arms of the rim, where the air will not blow it away.
