The Mark V was the version with which the British fighter force moved from the defense of the islands to offensive sorties over occupied France. The B type wing carried a pair of twenty-millimeter Hispano cannons beside four machine guns and the Merlin 45 engine had a supercharger tuned for medium altitudes. More than six thousand of them were built, so it is exactly this form of the Spitfire that modelers build most often of all.
In one twenty-fourth the cockpit canopy stops being a thin membrane. The transparent casting has a perceptible wall thickness and the viewer looks through it at an angle at which the inner side of the frame is in plain sight. That is why the set holds masks for the outer and the inner face: both have to be sprayed, or bare transparent plastic will shine inside the cockpit where the framework of the canopy should be.
The material is a thin paper with a sensitive adhesive, which can be bent over a rounded shape without breaking. Before sticking it is advisable to wash the transparent part and let it dry completely, so that the mask holds throughout the spraying and can then be taken off in one piece.
The B type wing has pronounced fairings above the weapons which run across the upper and the lower surface, and on many machines the national marking on the underside of the wing crosses them. Sprayed paint lies over such a step without rippling, whereas a decal breaks in that place. The best moment to take a mask off is when the paint is dry to the touch but not yet fully cured, because then the edge separates cleanly and no film is torn away with it.
This is an accessory for a kit of the corresponding scale; the aircraft itself is not in the package.
