About product

Kumano in 1:700 scale (Tamiya)

Plastic kit of the Japanese cruiser Kumano from the well-proven waterline range, that is with the hull cut at the waterline. The hull is split into two parts, which let the maker capture the shaping of the sides and the pronounced bulge more faithfully. The model has rotating main turrets seated on rubber inserts, a well-worked aft aircraft deck with rails and turntables, catapults, a crane and floatplanes. The finished model measures roughly 286 mm.

The real subject

Kumano was the fourth and last ship of the Mogami class, completed in 1937. Compared with the first two units she was given a larger bulge and a narrower, lower upper deck, a response to problems with stability and structural strength. On completion she carried triple 155 mm turrets, which had her rated as a light cruiser; those turrets were later replaced by twin 203 mm turrets and the ship was reclassified as a heavy cruiser. The armament was rounded out by 127 mm anti-aircraft guns and triple torpedo tube mounts, with an aircraft deck aft carrying catapults and reconnaissance floatplanes.

Building and painting tips

A waterline model goes together faster than a full-hull one, because the underwater section is left out. Glue the hull and sand the joint carefully so that the seam does not show. Prepare the superstructure, the masts and the fine parts separately and fit them only once the hull has its base coat. The model takes photo-etched railings and ladders well, and in this scale they lift the impression of the finished ship considerably. Paint with an airbrush in gray shades and set the deck apart; at the end add a wash into the detail of the superstructure and a light dry-brushing of the edges. The finished model shows to advantage on a smooth base imitating the surface of the sea.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of the Imperial Japanese Navy in 1:700 scale
  • Modelers who want to build the whole Mogami class
  • Builders of waterline ships and naval dioramas
  • Anyone interested in the naval war in the Pacific

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

On completion in 1937 she carried triple 155 mm turrets, which under the classification of the day placed her among the light cruisers. She was later rearmed with 203 mm guns and reclassified as a heavy cruiser.

It is the waterline version, that is the hull cut at the waterline without the underwater section. The model therefore goes together faster and sits well on a base imitating the sea.

Yes, Kumano belonged to the Mogami class together with Mogami, Mikuma and Suzuya, which the manufacturer offers in the same scale.
