About product

Japanese escort carriers in 1:3000 scale from Fujimi

This set of plastic models from the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi in the miniature 1:3000 scale brings up a little known chapter of the war in the Pacific — the Japanese escort carriers committed to the protection of convoys. The themed set will add to a collection of miniature vessels the types that appear only rarely in large scales.

The real subject

As an island empire Japan was existentially dependent on maritime transport of raw materials. With the growing losses of merchant ships, caused above all by American submarines, a need arose for systematic protection of convoys — so-called maritime escort warfare. Escort carriers were part of it, smaller and slower than fleet carriers and often converted from civilian vessels. Their aircraft searched for submarines and drove them away from the convoys. For all the effort, the losses of the merchant fleet could not be stopped, and the supply crisis became one of the causes of the Japanese defeat.

Building and painting tips

Separate the small parts with a sharp knife and bond them with a minimal amount of glue on the tip of a toothpick. Set the flight decks apart from the hulls with a shade and suggest their layout with a fine wash. In this scale cleanliness of execution is what counts — less is more. The set comes out well on a shared base as a convoy formation, possibly completed with miniatures of escorting vessels from other sets of the line.

Who the model is for

  • those interested in naval history and the war against convoys in the Pacific
  • collectors of aircraft carriers and of miniature scales
  • modelers looking for less usual subjects
  • builders of naval formations and dioramas

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Escort carriers were smaller and slower and often arose from the conversion of civilian ships. They served mainly for the anti-submarine protection of convoys, not for fleet operations.

The set is devoted to the Japanese escort carriers; the manufacturer does not state the exact list of vessels in the package.

The build is simple in the number of parts but calls for fine motor skills and careful work with glue. With tweezers and patience even a less experienced modeler will manage it.
