This set from Metallic Details contains a three-dimensionally printed rendering of the ground tail support used with the Messerschmitt Bf 109E, in 1:32 scale. Printing technology makes it possible to bring out thin sections and joints more sharply than they could be made in injection-molded plastic. It is not an airplane kit but an accessory to a model and to the ground scene around it.
The Messerschmitt Bf 109E was a version of the German single-engine fighter with the inverted V12 Daimler-Benz DB 601 engine, built at the turn of the 1930s and 1940s. The tail support belonged to the ordinary ground equipment: it lifted the rear of the fuselage into a level position, which was a necessary condition when harmonizing the gunsight and the guns, and it was useful for some maintenance tasks as well. It appears in period photographs beside machines on field airfields and it is a rewarding element for a diorama.
Wash the printed resin parts in lukewarm water with detergent, so that any residue of uncured print resin disappears - because otherwise the paint will not hold. Snip or cut the print supports off rather than snapping them; sand the remains away wet and with breathing protection. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, because cement for plastic is ineffective here. Apply a primer before painting. The structure pays to weather: a touch of rust, chipped edges and dust will set it into the scene more convincingly than an even coat of paint.
This is an accessory set, not a stand-alone model. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package.
