Copper State Models of Riga in Latvia is among the brands that take up the subject of the First World War consistently and in depth. Alongside its models of equipment it also releases a numerous figure line in 1:35 scale, and this set from it presents the driver of a German armored car. The set can be placed with a model of a vehicle and in a vignette scene of its own.
The driver of an armored car was a key figure in the crew. His view was limited to a narrow vision slit, handling the heavy chassis of the end of the second decade of the twentieth century was physically demanding, and finding the way in the terrain depended on the commander's directions. With the German armored cars, which the army committed mainly on the Eastern Front and to security duties, the driving was moreover often over unpaved roads, so a substantial part of the maintenance and the repairs in the field fell to the driver as well.
A driver figure naturally suggests itself seated behind the wheel, but it comes off more interestingly outside the car, at an open hood or during a short break. The relation to the equipment is thus kept and the scene gains action. In matching the colors of the whole composition it pays off to go by period photographs, because German field gray changed its shade over the course of the war and working dress differed markedly from parade dress.
