The M48A3 is the diesel version of the American M48 Patton tank. The conversion removed the main weakness of the older machines, namely their thirsty gasoline engine and with it their short range, and it also brought changes to the commander's cupola and the interior equipment. It was in this form that the M48 served in Vietnam, where it supported infantry, escorted convoys and fought at close range in dense vegetation. Period photographs show the vehicles covered with crates, drums, spare track links and the crews' personal belongings.
