The Viennese rubber works Semperit was among the suppliers of the German armed forces after the annexation of Austria, and its tires appeared on trucks and on armored equipment alike. The brand had a characteristic sidewall pattern and tread of its own, so it is a detail by which the origin of a tire can be told in photographs. On eight-wheeled reconnaissance cars we meet it above all in the later period.
The modeler gets eight identical castings and so a set of questions fewer: the tread is finished, there is no seam and the disc matches the wartime version. What remains is to solve the shade. New rubber is black only for a moment, then it quickly goes gray and dust settles on the surface, so a medium gray with a drop of brown mixed into it comes across more truly. Leave the darker tone only in the gaps between the blocks.
It is also effective to suggest the difference between the upper and the lower part of the wheel. The bottom tends to be dirtied and more matte, whereas the sidewalls above the fender keep a cleaner appearance. The difference is enough to suggest with two layers of pigment of differing coarseness.
Glue the resin parts with cyanoacrylate after washing them beforehand. Never use solvent cement intended for polystyrene: it will not attack the surface of the casting and will not hold the joint. When sanding, protect your airways, as resin dust is very fine.
A few more words on why resin accessories are so popular for wheels. A casting mold captures even a very shallow pattern that an injection tool could not fill, and the material has no tendency to sink in the walls. The result is a part on which the lettering, the production markings and the fine ribbing of the sidewall are all visible: that is, exactly the elements the eye looks for first on a finished model.
