About product

M3 Stuart late form: basic photo-etched set 1:35 (DEF Model)

This product is not a kit of the vehicle. It is a basic set of photo-etched metal parts intended for a plastic kit of the American M3 Stuart light tank in the late form that you have already bought. The set deals with the thin-walled parts that injection-molded plastic cannot mold at the right thickness, and replaces simplified molded detail with fine metal.

What the photo-etched set deals with

On a light tank the most obvious candidates for metal are the fenders and their edge strips, the grilles and screens over the engine compartment, the light guards, the brackets and clasps on the hull, and the lifting eyes and small fittings on the turret. In 1:35 scale plastic parts have edges several times thicker than the real ratio, and seen from the side that gives the scale away at once. Photo-etched sheet gives the model the right profile, and parts with a moving function can also be bent into a realistic position.

The real subject

The M3 Stuart was an American light tank in service from the start of the 1940s. It was fast, reliable and supplied in quantity to the Allies, among them British units in North Africa, where it earned a reputation as an exceptionally mobile vehicle. It carried a small-caliber gun and machine guns, so it was no match for medium tanks, but it served excellently for reconnaissance and escort work. During production it went through a series of changes to the hull, the turret and the suspension, which is why early and late examples differ noticeably from one another and detailing sets are distinguished accordingly.

Usage and painting tips

Cut the parts out with photo-etch scissors or trim them with a knife on a hard surface. Make the folds in a bending tool or between two blades. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue), as cement for plastic will not hold on brass. Remove the original molded detail first and level the surface, otherwise the detail will be doubled. Degrease the metal and spray a base coat. American vehicles are commonly painted in olive green, on which a darkening wash, fine chipping on the edges of the fenders and dust pigments on the running gear all show up well.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers of American Second World War armored vehicles in 1:35 scale
  • Builders who want to replace thick plastic fenders and grilles with metal
  • Anyone building the M3 Stuart in the late form
  • Modelers with experience of bending photo-etched parts and using cyanoacrylate

This is a detailing set, not a stand-alone model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

You do not. It is a set of photo-etched metal parts for detailing a plastic M3 Stuart kit you have already bought.

The M3 Stuart changed during production in its hull, turret and suspension. According to its name, the set is intended for the late production form of the vehicle.

With cyanoacrylate glue. Ordinary cement for plastic will not bond metal sheet.

Yes, it has to be degreased and sprayed with a base coat. Without a primer the shade peels off smooth metal.
