An injection-molded plastic kit of the British Revenge-class battleship in 1:350 scale from the manufacturer Trumpeter. The manufacturer states over 510 parts, a hull divided into two halves, a deck with a finely executed imitation of wooden planking, photo-etched parts, a metal anchor chain and a stand. The finished model measures 54 cm in length with a width of 8.9 cm — so reckon with a large display piece that needs its own space.
The Royal Oak was one of the five Revenge-class battleships; it was laid down in 1914 and entered service in 1916. It went down in history above all for its end. On the night of 14 October 1939, that is, in the very first weeks of the Second World War, it was torpedoed by the German submarine U-47 under the command of Guenther Prien — and that right in its home base of Scapa Flow in the Orkneys, which was considered safe. The submarine got through the channel between the sunken blockships and the barriers, attacked and escaped. Of a crew numbering over 1200 men, 835 sailors died, among them many very young boys in training. The loss of a ship in a defended base was a hard blow for the Royal Navy. The wreck is to this day a protected war grave and Royal Navy divers raise the naval ensign over it every year in memory of the fallen.
With a ship model of this scope the center of gravity of the work lies in the superstructures, the gun turrets, the armament and the rigging — there is a great number of small parts. Build in subassemblies and paint them before you install them: later you will not reach them. Spray the hull and the decks with an airbrush over a primer and apply thin modeling cement for plastic sparingly, so that you do not flood the engraved detail. Bond the photo-etched railings, ladders and aerials with super glue (cyanoacrylate). Leave rigging from drawn sprue or elastic thread until the very end, once everything is painted.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
