The center of a wheel is always the most exposed place on a model. An injection-molded wheel usually has the nuts merely suggested, or even merged into a single shape, so seen from the side the wheel looks flat and without depth. Separate parts remove that shortcoming and at the same time make it possible to paint the nuts in a different metal shade from the rest of the wheel, which is entirely usual on rally and circuit cars. The difference shows best on cars with large wheels, where the center becomes the dominant feature of the whole side.
