Fasteners are the detail that marks out a careful build from an average one. Miniature screws, nuts and rivets in sizes from roughly 0.5 to 2.5 mm stand in for hexagon bolt heads, lightweight racing fasteners, cross-head screws and the fittings that terminate a hose run. On a real vehicle, fixings are visible everywhere – across the engine, the chassis and the bonnet mountings – and a model without them looks bare. Note that you choose these by diameter, not by the scale of the kit.
An injection-moulded kit represents a bolt head as a shallow raised circle at best. Separate screws and nuts in resin, 3D print or metal are set into pre-drilled holes and create real relief: hexagons on a cam cover, a row of rivets along a frame rail, lightweight fasteners on a racing bonnet. Fittings then form the junction between the engine and its hoses; without them, a plumbed engine bay never looks finished. Most items are general-purpose, so the same packet serves a road car, a single-seater or a commercial vehicle.
What matters is the head diameter in millimetres, which is stated on every packet. For 1:24 and 1:25 car model kits, sizes around 0.7 to 1.2 mm usually look right, while large scales such as 1:8 and 1:12 car model kits can carry more prominent fixings. When in doubt, go one size smaller than feels right: an oversized bolt head reads as a lump, while a slightly small one simply disappears into the shadow.
Hexagon heads belong on engines and chassis, dome rivets on frames and bodywork, and recessed or lightened fasteners on racing subjects. Loose nuts with washers also earn their place in a workshop diorama, scattered on a bench or in an open toolbox.
Packets hold tens to hundreds of pieces, so one purchase covers several builds. It is worth keeping two or three diameters on the bench, because there is always somewhere on a model where a small fixing is missing. Drill the receiving holes before any paint goes on; a bit wandering across a finished body shell is a mistake you only make once.
