A vacuum-formed clear screen for a model of the Ducati Desmosedici racing motorcycle in 1:12 scale. According to the manufacturer the material is two tenths of a millimeter thick, that is, a fraction of what the injected clear part out of the box measures. That is exactly the point of the replacement: a thinner, glossier screen matches reality far better than a thick plastic molding.
The screen on a racing motorcycle is a thin shell that a rider hardly registers while cornering. The injected part in a kit, however, has a thickness set by the technology, so it creates a pronounced light rim at the edge and the whole part looks as though it were made of furniture-grade acrylic. A formed film does away with that problem and on top of that has a smoother, glossier surface with no mold marks.
Cut the part out with a small margin using paper scissors and only then sand it down to the line with fine abrasive on a flat surface. Never cut the shape directly with a blade, as the film cracks. It is glued with glue for clear parts or spot-glued with super glue, which can leave a white haze on film, so dose it in minimal amounts. The edge can be picked out with a thin line of paint following the pattern of the real machine. Work with the film in gloves, as fingerprints stay on it.
