Ikarus-526 is a kit of a fire tender in 1:43 scale from the maker AVD Models. The Hungarian marque known for buses built an exceptional fire-fighting special that took its folding doors from the buses.

The kit captures the Ikarus-526 fire tender. It is a vehicle that most often stops collectors in their tracks, because they know the marque solely from buses. That is exactly why it is a rewarding model for a cabinet: in 1:43 scale it fits among other fire-fighting vehicles and among buses alike, and in both groups it will be an exception.
The vehicle came about at the Hungarian Ikarus works in 1964 and 1965, and only around a hundred were built. It served in Budapest and in other Hungarian cities. The designers drew on what they did best: the vehicle received folding doors of the bus type, which was an unusual solution on fire-fighting equipment but proved very practical. The doors took up no room beside the vehicle when opened, and the whole ten-man crew could get out practically at once within a few seconds. Only a few examples have survived in Hungary to this day, some of them in museum condition, so the model is for many collectors the only form of this vehicle available.
Fire-fighting equipment stands and falls on the quality of the red paint. Red covers less well, so it pays to lay a light base down first and only then thin coats of the top shade. Do not hurry; two or three thin coats look better than one heavy one. Pick out the folding doors and their frames with a fine brush, because they are what make the model what it is. Glue the glazing only once the paint is finished, ideally with an adhesive that does not fog clear parts. Fire vehicles used to be well kept, so the weathering can be restrained: fine dust on the wheels and the lower edges, slight scuffs on the places that are stepped on and a lightly dulled exhaust.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
