A set of pre-cut self-adhesive masks for the glazing of a model of the AH-64 attack helicopter in 1:48 scale from Art Scale. It is not a helicopter model or decals but an aid for a build. The double-sided version means that the set allows for masking the outer and the inner side of the clear parts, so the framing can be sprayed in the interior color from inside and in the final finish from outside. On a helicopter that shows markedly, because the cockpit is divided into large flat panels with prominent frames and at close quarters the inner side of the glass is clearly visible. The masks are cut to the outline of the Academy kit. They will not fit a kit from another manufacturer.
The AH-64 is an American twin-engine attack helicopter with a tandem cockpit layout, in which the weapons systems operator sits in front and the higher-set pilot behind. The lifting system consists of a four-blade main rotor and power comes from a pair of turboshaft engines. Under the nose sits a swiveling 30 mm cannon, and on the stub wings on the sides of the fuselage there are pylons for guided antitank missiles and pods of unguided rockets. The machine is designed with the survivability of the airframe and the crew in mind. The cockpit has angular flat glazing, which came about precisely from the requirements for survivability and low glint.
Degrease the clear parts and let them dry. Lift the masks off the sheet with tweezers or the tip of a scalpel and seat them from one edge, pushing the air out. The large flat panels are easy to mask; what matters is lining the edge of the mask up precisely with the engraved frame, so check each part against the light. Press the edges down with a wooden toothpick. The recommended order is the inner side in the interior color first and, once dry, the outer side with the base coat and the final finish. Take the masks off shortly after the paint has dried, at an acute angle, and wipe adhesive residue away with lukewarm water.
It is a supplementary set of masks, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
