A plastic landing gear leg has a thankless job on a finished model: it carries the weight of the whole airframe, often with nose weight on top of that, and in time it sags or breaks under it. A bronze casting solves that problem once and for all. Metal holds the geometry, stands up to being handled when a display case is moved, and at the same time allows a finer rendering of the leg, because it needs no extra thickness for safety. The set is made by the Czech firm Eduard.
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 of the A series was a single-seat fighter powered by the air-cooled BMW 801 fourteen-cylinder radial. Compared with contemporary fighters with liquid-cooled V12 engines it offered a more robust powerplant, a wide landing gear track and easy handling. The A-8 was the most numerous sub-version of the A series and carried heavier armament and extended equipment. The wide landing gear track and the legs retracting inward toward the fuselage are characteristic of this type, and on a model the landing gear is one of the most exposed parts.
Start by taking any small burrs off the metal castings with a needle file and leveling the surfaces to be glued. Before painting, degrease the metal thoroughly with alcohol and use a primer made for metal; without it the paint will not hold on smooth bronze and will rub off during assembly. They are glued with cyanoacrylate, and on loaded joints a gel type with a longer curing time is worth using. Put the greater weight of the part to use by standing the model on its wheels first and gluing the covers on afterward; the landing gear then settles itself under the real load. Finish the painting with a wash and a faint trace of wear on the contact surface.
