The photo-etched set from the Metallic Details brand serves for working up the landing gear bays on a model of the Mil Mi-24 attack helicopter in 1:48 scale. It is not a model of the helicopter, but an accessory. You obtain the base kit separately and the set replaces or complements the simplified plastic parts in it.
The Mi-24 has retractable landing gear and the bays of the main wheels are clearly visible from below and from the side on a parked machine. In kits these areas tend to be bare and shallow, without the texture of the skin, the struts and the runs. Photo-etched sheet has the correct thickness in 1:48, so the ribbing and the covers look like sheet metal parts rather than an impression of the mold. The set pays off most on a model on a stand or in a diorama, where the landing gear is in view.
The Mil Mi-24 is a heavy attack helicopter with an armored cockpit and a cargo compartment for troops. The Mi-24V version carries antitank guided missiles and a traversing machine gun turret in the nose, while the Mi-24VP has a fixed twin-barrel cannon instead of it. From the outside the two versions differ precisely in the nose, and otherwise they are very similar, so this set serves both.
With photo-etched parts the preparation decides. Cut the parts off with a scalpel, deburr the remains of the tabs with a file and only then form them. The bending is done along the etched grooves, which set the exact angle, and best of all in a bending tool, because thin sheet easily ripples when bent with pliers. Dose the cyanoacrylate glue in minute drops, so that it does not run into the engraving. Degrease the brass with alcohol and apply a primer before painting, otherwise the paint does not hold on the smooth metal and is scuffed off during assembly.
The set is an accessory for building a model, not a standalone model. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
